It is that time of the year again! The InsuResilience Annual Forum is coming back this October in a virtual format with some very exciting opportunities to learn, exchange and interact ahead of the UNFCCC COP26 in Glasgow. 

We know many of you have been looking forward to meeting again this year and seeing the innovative projects and activities that the members and partners of our network have been engaged in over the past year.

For this reason, we are thrilled to dedicate the latest issue of our newsletter to feature our upcoming activities ahead of the UNFCCC COP26, looking at the latest Climate and Disaster Risk Finance and Insurance (CDRFI) trends and exploring further developments such as the Meeting of the High-Level Consultative Group (HLCG), the highly anticipated InsuResilience Annual Forum and, last but not least, the launch of our newest product: our very own InsuResilience Magazine.

The InsuResilience Annual Forum will take place virtually on the 28th and 29th of October, ahead of the UNFCCC’s COP26. The two-day event will be a chance for you to take part in engaging conversations, exchange on best practices, and discuss future directions to jointly drive forward effective, affordable, and accessible Climate Disaster Risk Finance and Insurance solutions. From the Leaders Dialogue sessions, to regional sessions and an interview with Nobel Prize winner Abhijit Banerjee, our varied agenda is sure to pique your interest. Don’t miss out!

A Glimpse into some of our exciting sessions

Sit down with Nobel Prize Winner Abhijit Banerjee and Ekhosuehi Iyahen

Join us for an insightful 30-minute interview with Professor Abhijit Banerjee on the way to build more resilient societies. The interview will be conducted by Ekhosuehi Iyahen, Secretary General of the Insurance Development Forum (IDF), a Public-Private Partnership led by the insurance industry.

Abhijit has authored a large number of articles & books, including Poor Economics, which won the Goldman Sachs Business Book of the Year, and Good Economics for Hard Times, both co-authored with Esther Duflo.

Leaders Dialogue: Scaling up sovereign use of Climate & Disaster Risk Finance and Insurance

Climate and disaster risk finance and insurance (CDRFI) solutions in developing countries can protect sovereign governments and citizens from the impacts of disasters and help build up their resilience. Yet, take-up of CDRFI-solutions is still limited and needs to be scaled-up. In this session we will hear governments’ perspectives on the use of CDRFI solutions and get a better understanding from the public sector and insurance industry leaders looking to scale up use of these tools.

Leaders Dialogue: What is needed to move the needle: Smart Premium and Capital Support                                     

This panel discussion will outline the current status and challenges with CDRFI (needs-based approach), and highlight ways forward to meet needs, scale up, and ensure the sustainability of CDRFI support to enhance resilience.

Leaders Dialogue: Bringing climate change down to earth: building resilience of smallholder farmers

Climate Disaster Risk Finance and Insurance (CDRFI) approaches can address climate-related threats to our food systems, reduce adverse impacts, and strengthen the physical and financial resilience of smallholder farmers. This session will comprise a structured discussion into how climate change is impacting the lives and livelihoods of small farmers, opportunities for insurance and risk management at micro- and meso- levels, and actions needed to scale up CDRFI solutions in agriculture.

Implementation Insights from the Region: Asia and Pacific

The panel discussion will explore insights from three climate risk insurance initiatives in the Asia-Pacific region, highlighting their achievements, openly discussing their challenges, and sharing lessons learned.

Implemented in Viet Nam, Fiji, and Nepal, all projects have ambitions to scale-up their activities in additional countries in the region.

Innovative approaches to reduce the climate risk financing gap in Latin America and the Caribbean

Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) is one of the regions most exposed and vulnerable to the effects of climate and weather-related events. To overcome this challenge, the LAC region needs innovative climate and disaster risk financing solutions and insurance mechanisms. Tune into this regional session to learn more from projects case studies on the ground.

5th meeting of the HLCG 2021

The HLCG will convene on the margins of COP26, on October 27th, to address key topics on Premium and Capital Support and the general Climate and Disaster Risk Finance and Insurance architecture, building on the outcomes of their last meeting in June. We will share in the latest conclusions on the next issue of the Newsletter, so stay tuned!

We are delighted to announce the launch of the first edition of the InsuResilience Magazine on October 25th. In our new Magazine series, we will discuss the latest developments in the Climate and Disaster Risk Finance and Insurance sector and showcase innovative solutions implemented by our Partnership members. In close alignment with one of the main topics of the upcoming HLCG meeting and Annual Forum, the first edition focuses on SMART Premium and Capital Support and its role in advancing the global uptake of prearranged risk finance.

New InsuRisk Report available now

The new report includes a global update of the InsuRisk assessment tool, providing information on climate and disaster risk and readiness for insurance solutions for 188 countries. In addition, it includes a thematic discussion of an emerging field which has gained increasing attention during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic: social protection in the context of climate and disaster risk.
